What To Buy For A Newborn

When it comes to buying for a newborn baby, we mummies definitely have a reputation of going a little overboard. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it just means that we inevitably end up with lots of expensive things that never see the light of day.

There are so many different products out there promising to make life as a new mother much easier for us, but how do we know what we need and what we’ll never actually use? Well this guide will help you when it comes to deciding what to buy for your newborn, and what you definitely don’t need to buy.

Essentials for the first few weeks:

Baby Clothes

  • It’s recommended to have at least eight sleep suits handy for when the new baby arrives. I know it may be tempting to buy thousands of fashionable outfits, but all they really need to live in in their first few months are sleep suits, maybe a cardigan and a vest too if It’s cold. Buy a mix of long and short sleeves.
  • Two cotton hats
  • Two pairs of scratch mittens to help stop baby from scratching their face.
  • 8 pairs of socks or booties, to wear with nightgowns and outfits
  • Stock up on around six vests/ bodysuits. These can be worn under outfits or on their own if it’s warm.
  • 8 pairs of socks or booties.
  • Cotton bibs.

Nappies

  • I would recommend buying two boxes of newborn nappies to have ready in the house at first, but don’t buy too many too quick just incase you have a big baby or they grow quickly.
  • Don’t forget you will need nappy sacks and wet wipes or cotton wool too. A changing pad would also be a worthwhile purchase.

Feeding Equipment

If formula feeding, combi feeding or expressing your breastmilk, you'll need these...

  • Bottles, bottle brushes and a steriliser.
  • Burp cloths
  • Pacifiers
  • Formula, if not breastfeeding.
  • A pump, if you're planning to combi feed or exclusively express.

Bathing

It’s easy for us to forget about all of the bathing equipment with everything else going on, but here’s everything you will need for bath time.

  • Baby bathtub
  • Baby soap
  • Baby shampoo
  • Baby hairbrush
  • Soft washcloths
  • Stock up on two or three soft towels for baby too.

Travel

  • So you will need to think about getting around with baby. Travel is an essential point to consider. Here are a few things that you will definitely need.
  • If you have a car, then you will need to make sure you have a rear-facing car seat before your baby can get in.
  • The other main essential is a pram that lies flat and is suitable for newborns. Then you are good to go.

Baby’s Bed

You will need a mattress that fits your moses basket or cot, whichever you choose to put your baby straight into.

  • If your little one is going straight into a cot then you will need sheets and blankets for that too.
  • Stock up on pram size blankets too for when you’re out and about with baby.

So once you have the majority of these things, you’re more or less good to go! I hope this guide has helped some of you and don’t forget to have a look over my hospital bag checklist.
