Research Shows That Babies Should Start Weaning With BITTER Food!

Are you thinking of starting to wean your little one soon? This tip may help you in the long run…

Child diet experts at University College London are now advising parents to choose bitter vegetables like broccoli, spinach and cauliflower as their baby’s first solid food, rather than sweet or bland flavours like rusks, baby rice or fruit.

They say baby rice, popular with many parents, is too bland and can cause a ‘missed opportunity’ to promote a broad palate. Sweet foods can actually make a baby reluctant to eat their veggies later on – that’s no surprise though!

Dr Clare Llewellyn and Dr Hayley Syrad, who researched this topic for over a decade, recommend that the first foods offered to babies at around six months be bitter vegetables, because these are the foods most commonly disliked by children. Offering them first can help a child develop a taste for them.

Remember – even if it takes up to 15 attempts with a vegetable to make a child like the taste, studies suggest this method works to make children less fussy and enjoy healthier foods.
