Keeping Safe In The Cold

Weather warnings are in place across the UK currently – it is imperative that we all keep safe!

Here are a few quick tips… they may seem obvious but it’s always good to have a refresher. Batten down the hatches and get cosy…

Warmth

Heating is SO expensive to have cranked on! You could be entitled to a cold weather payment… find out more here!

Keep the heating on at one consistent temperature, as it takes energy to keep firing it up; it’s cheaper to keep your house consistently warm all day rather than blasting it every few hours if that makes sense?

Layer up! Slippers, vests, dressing gown, woollen socks… oh, and quilts! Make yourself into a human burrito.

We looooove this dinosaur dressing gown; it’s available from 2 years to 14 years. Click the image to have a nosey…

I absolutely adore this chunky knitted blanket from Etsy; check it out here! I bet it’s soooo warm & soft…

Finally, try not to be too afraid to turn the heating on if you’re on a direct debit. Higher payments now are easily factored out by lower payments in the summer when the weather is nice. If you’re on a pre-payment meter, consider your budget and see where you can cut down a little to afford some extra heat. Every extra quid will help.

Roads

Don’t make unnecessary journeys; your car insurance may be void if you venture out in the red warning zone, find out more here. Check the terms and conditions of your insurance!

Properly de-ice your car; failing to do so could again invalidate your car insurance.

Footwear

Make sure you wear shoes with good tread; it may seem obvious but it’s so easy to chuck on any footwear without realising you’ve put on boots with no grip, only to notice when you’re flying arse over tit on ice.

Can you tell that I’ve done the above many, many times…?

You can get excellent winter walking footwear for yourself from John Lewis here!

These Timberland Tykes are currently reduced; you can see more here! They look sturdy and are designed to be ‘grippy’.

Food

Make sure you eat regularly; keep it balanced, and if you’re low carb consider increasing your carb intake whilst the weather is poor to ensure maximum energy.

Invest in a slow cooker – you won’t regret it. This 3.5 litre slow cooker doubles as a CHALK BOARD and is currently £19.99 from John Lewis; click here to see more. I can imagine the chalk board feature being super entertaining for your wee ones!

This slow cooker shepherd’s pie from BBC Good Foods looks delicious, nutritious, filling and warming – perfect during this sort of weather. You can see their entire collection of slow cooker recipes here!

Finally…

Stay informed. Check the forecast and weather warnings regularly to ensure that you make the best & safest possible decisions.

Stay warm and safe, guys.
