Paper Plate Port Holes Tutorial

Continuing on with our under-the-sea theme in our playroom, we have created our own mini aquariums/port hole views using paper plates.  These are nice and easy to make, and can be as simple or complicated as you’d like.

Here is what you’ll need;

  • Paper plates,
  • Child friendly paint,
  • Glue (we used hot glue),
  • Child friendly paint,
  • Coloured paper,
  • Scissors,
  • Cellophane (optional – window effect)
  • any additional decorations – shells, stones, glitter, gems, googly eyes, etc.

Here is how to make them:

  1. Place your paper plates into pairs.
  2. Cut the centre of one of the paper plate out, leaving you with the outer ring. Paint this outer ring yellow for a port hole effect, or silver for an aquarium. (To keep the integrity of the ring shape, sit this over an upside down plate as it dries).
  3. Paint the other paper plate sea blue or any design of your choice.
  4. Cut out and decorate your sea creatures.
  5. Stick these onto your under-the-sea painted plate/s.
  6. Optional step – cut out a circle of cellophane, sticking this onto the inside of the cut out outer ring.
  7. Stick the outer ring and the under-the-sea themed plate together using glue (hot glue works really well for this).
  8. Stick up and enjoy.

Here are the ones we have made for our playroom;

We are now in the process of replacing our alphabet wall with some new crafts.  Keep your eye out for more under-the-sea crafts and baby/toddler activities coming soon.
