When was Tesco founded?

Founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a collection of market stalls in Hackney, London, Tesco has gone on to become a leading multinational retailer operating stores in the UK, Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia with over 345,00 staff members. The name Tesco was first coined in 1924, combining three letters of ‘T.E. Stockwell’ (a shipment of tea purchased by the brand in its early days) and the first two letters of Cohen’s surname.

The supermarket carries a diverse selection of items such as clothing, tech, homeware and books - to name just a few - but the main products it sells are food and drink. Its own food brands are split into two ranges, the ‘Tesco Value’ range is offered as a low-cost alternative, while the ‘Tesco Finest’ selection focuses on quality at a higher price point.
