Healthy habits every mum should have

It is exhausting being a mum, we spend all of the time caring for our children (and hubby *insert eye roll*), cleaning up after them all while juggling work and general life so its no wonder we end up forgetting about ourselves.

The thing is if we neglect our well-being then we won’t be able to be the happy, playful and organised mums that we all strive to be that’s why I practice these habits every day.

  • Water – As soon as I wake up in the morning I immediately drink a glass of water before even getting out of bed. One of the main reasons we wake up feeling tired (besides the fact we have babies and toddlers disturbing our sleep most nights) is dehydration, by drinking a glass of water straight away you give your body the energy boost its needs. Our brain is made up of 70% water so we need to be hydrated for our brain to function at its best, hence why we feel so dazed after hours of sleep.

  • Make the bed – This sounds silly but making the bed before leaving my bedroom in the morning is the best thing I ever started doing. It sets the tone for the rest of the day, by making my bed I set off a kind of domino effect leading to a very productive morning which leads to a productive afternoon and so on.

  • Eat breakfast – Raise your hand if you’re guilty of skipping breakfast! I think we have all got into this unhealthy habit at some point, always make sure you eat something even if it’s just a piece of fruit or a cereal bar anything is better than nothing.

  • Exercise – Whenever I hear the word exercise my mind gets flooded with thoughts of exhaustion and pain and effort but exercise doesn’t need to be a full-on workout. All I do is add a walk into my morning routine, it could be a trip to the corner shop or walking your child to school rather than driving. By doing a little bit of exercise your body will produce more energy to help you through the rest of your day.

  • Write things down – My mum taught me this one if you write everything down in a notebook that you only ever keep at home and always put it back in the same place. By doing this I have saved myself countless problems because I have all the information I need right in front of me, technology can break and get stolen or lost so I always back up all my information on good old pen and paper. Not only that but the act oh actually writing something down helps me to remember it.

  • Smile – Let’s face it, being a mum can be such a chore sometimes so make sure to relish in the good times. If your having a particularly stressful day take a moment to remember who you’re doing it all for, I like looking through photos of my children to cheer me up, your babies smile makes everything better (soppy but true and you know it).

A happy mum makes for a happy child so never be afraid to ask for help from your partner, family, friends when you need a break.
