This news has got us really excited: David Attenborough will be teaching geography to kids at home during Lockdown!

It’s been announced that Sir David Attenborough will be teaching geography online in order to help out with school children staying home during lockdown.

The legendary presenter and nature enthusiast will commence teaching through BBC Bitesize this week.

Other celebrities getting involved in the lessons include: One Direction superstar Liam Payne, scientist Professor Brian Cox, actress Jodie Whittaker and even Dannie Dyer! Premier League footballer Sergio Agüero has also offered to teach Spanish. How amazing is this?

In total, there’ll be 6 20 minute programmes every day for you to tune in for. A total of 200 teachers and celebrities are taking part in the programmes.

Alice Webb, the director of BBC Children’s and Education said: “We’re proud that the BBC can bring together so many people to offer such a wide-ranging package of support to help children and parents right across the UK at such a challenging time.

She went on to say “We said the BBC would be there for people through this crisis, and we meant it. It’s vital that every child is able to continue learning – and the lessons we’re putting on will make sure they have fun at the same time.”

The classes have been developed alongside teaching professionals and are designed to support children all of ages.

This announcement coincides with the Education Secretary’s comments on school closures:“People are anxious to know when we’re going to relax restrictions, when schools are likely to be fully back and open again. Of course, I want nothing more than to see schools back, get them back to normal, make sure that children are sat around learning and experiencing the joy of being at school. But I can’t give you a date. Because before we do, we need to meet five tests.”

You can tune in to watch the lessons on BBC Bitesize Daily through BBC iPlayer and the BBC Red Button.
