I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read this story… but then it made sense when I stopped to think about it!
A biotech company in California called ‘Sugarlogix’ plans to make a ‘superfood supplement’ pill using the natural sugars (oligosaccharides) found in breastmilk, due to scientific studies showing how these sugars benefit the stomach lining of babies by feeding the good bacteria. They hope to apply the same concept to adults in order to treat tummy issues such as IBS.
It sounds like a pretty amazing concept to me – breast milk really is awesome stuff.
However, there is debate as to whether the benefits would be there for grown adults as opposed to infants, as adults already have their own established colonies of gut bacteria. The jury is out – it’s worth a try, right?
Hooray to booby juice!
What do YOU make of this development?
Would you use this probiotic, or is it something that you’re sceptical of?
Breastfeeding mums, would YOU ever donate or sell your ‘white gold’ for this use? Explain why or why not in the comments!
Love from Katie. Xx
