Purchasing a Pushchair: Things To Consider

Are you on the lookout for a new pushchair, pram, stroller (or whichever term you prefer) for your child? There are some important details to consider.

It’s an important purchase, mummies & daddies, so you need to cover all bases and consider all aspects of your potential purchase. There’s nothing as annoying as getting excited for something you’ve bought, only for it to be unsuitable and a waste of money, right?

Well, these bullet points could really help you to get what you need out of a new pushchair; feel free to share with your fellow parent friends!

  • Facing: do you want world facing, parent facing, or dual?
  • Handle bars: do you want 2, so that you can hook bags on, or do you want one single bar?
  • How many wheels: 3 wheeler or 4 wheeler? They handle differently so you need to consider these!
  • Type of wheels; EVA (foam) or air-filled? If you live somewhere with rough terrain, you may want to think about this long and hard.
  • Folding; do you want an umbrella fold? Or a more compact fold?
  • Buggy board; can a buggy board be attached to it if you use it with another baby in future?
  • Storage; do you want a pushchair with a decently sized basket underneath? Are pockets and pouches enough?
  • Finer details; would a pocket for a tablet be handy? A bell? A key chain?
  • Weight: how heavy is too heavy for your needs?
  • Height: if you’re particularly tall, or on the shorter side, you may want to check the height of a pushchair to ensure comfort.
  • Aesthetics: do colours and patterns matter to you?
  • Size when folded: will it fit in your car? You’d be surprised how many people don’t think about this when purchasing.
  • Weight limit: will your child get much use of it? If your child is 20kg, and the pram has a 22kg limit, you may want to consider against the purchase.
  • Car seats: some pushchairs can be used with car seats, so if you’re likely to use the pushchair for a future baby, it might be worth researching one that can be used with a carrycot or infant car seat and which adaptors you’ll need.
  • How tall is your child: if your little one is measuring particularly tall on the centile chart, and/or is a fast grower, you may want to consider this when picking your new pushchair.
  • Are they close to walking independently in public: if it’s only a matter of time before they’re mature enough to walk around the shops and walk to preschool, your budget may want to reflect this. Why spend hundreds on something you won’t use often?

What else would you add to the list? Tell us in the comments!
