In light of an inflammatory article written by the infamous Richard Littlejohn, Centre Parcs has ceased to advertise in the Daily Mail.
The article in question criticised famous diver Tom Daley and his husband Dustin Lance Black, who recently announced the lovely news that they’re expecting a little baby of their own.
Littlejohn claimed that children “benefit most from being raised by a man and a woman“, and despite agreeing that a large amount of single parents do a great job raising their kids single handedly, he still clings to “the belief that children benefit most from being brought up by a man and a woman.”
He claims to support civil partnerships and gay adoption – however, the entire tone of his article comes across as ‘I’m not homophobic BUT…‘.
He also claims that the act of surrogacy to provide gay couples with their own child is a ‘trend towards treating women as mere breeding machines and babies as commodities.’ I’m sure that the thousands of gay couples who were able to become parents due to the selfless act of surrogates (who actively volunteer to give this amazing gift) would wholeheartedly disagree!
It isn’t ‘trendy’ to want a family of your own, whether you’re gay, straight, bisexual, asexual, or any other form of sexuality!
An advert for Centre Parcs appeared on the aforementioned article, sparking a flurry of complaints to Centre Parcs, such as this tweet;
“My son so wants me to book at your parks, but how can I do that if you support homophobia?”
Centre Parcs was quick to respond with;
London’s Southbank Centre has also announced that they won’t be advertising with The Daily Mail anymore in light of the article.
It’s disheartening to see attitudes such as that of Richard Littlejohn’s perpetuated in 2018; particularly in such a popular publication! People are entitled to their beliefs but it’s not appropriate to air offensive views, especially so soon after the couple announced their happy news, nor is it appropriate to brand anyone in disagreement ‘diversity bigots’! What a downer for them!
However, to put a positive spin on things, it’s brilliant to see large companies such as Centre Parcs taking a stand and supporting LGBTQ parents! Kudos!
