How To Survive A Sleep Regression

If your reading this post it’s probably because your amazingly sleeping child has done a 360 and sleep is now a thing of the past.

We have all been there, just when you think you have found a great sleeping routine, BAM! You find yourself knee deep In a sleep regression. Gone are those ‘see you in the morning’ bedtimes. It is now ‘See you in an hour’.

If you are waking up in the morning thinking ‘What just happened?’ You my friend, have just been assaulted by a sleep regression. And it ain’t pretty!!

Signs you have entered a sleep regression

Sleep regressions are tied to big developmental jumps. Your baby’s brain is working up to learn millions of new things. Growth spurts often occur around :

6 weeks

12 weeks

16 weeks

6 months

9 months

The most common sleep regression happen at 4 months and 8 Months. The 4 month sleep regression feels the hardest on most parents as it is the first one. I like to call this more of a ‘progression’ as your baby is entering its first major developmental stage and his/her sleep cycle is maturing. If you find your baby is more fussier, naps are much longer, nighttime sleep is very disturbed then you are experiencing a sleep regression. These can last anywhere between 2-6 weeks.

Sleep regressions are unavoidable. There is no way to avoid these as it is your babies brain maturing and developing. However, there are ways to prepare yourself to help make this hard stage a little be easier on yourself.

Top Tips To Help A Sleep Regression.

1.Swaddle/Gro Bag – From personal experience I found when my baby was wrapped up in one of these it helped to settle them a lot easier. It helps them feel more secure. If you have never tried swaddling before, now would be the perfect time to try it, through a very fussy phase of the 4 month sleep regression. If you are past the swaddling stage then try a gro bag.

2.Black out – Your babies environment plays a huge role on how they will sleep. By the time you reach a sleep regression, baby will most likely know the difference between his/hers night and day. The darker the room the better! Babies brains respond to light, it signals their brain that it is activity time. So you want to keep that nursery as pitch black as possible during nap time and night time.

3.Keep it quite – During a sleep regression your baby will be experiences longer periods of light sleep. You want to keep it quite during night time as little noises may start to wake them. Invest in a white noise machine to help soothe them and block out any unwanted noise.

4.Adjust babies bedtime – Lesser/shorter naps during the day will mean baby will need extra zzz’s at night. Put baby down to bed earlier so they can compensate for this. Lack of sleep will only add to the fussiness.

5.Feed when needed – Sleep regressions tends to coincide with a growth spurt which means baby will be more hungry. Don’t be afraid to throw in a dream feed if you think baby will need it. It may also help them sleep a little longer during the night.

6.Let Them Practice – If your baby has just learnt a new skill, such as rolling over. Give them lots of time to practice it during the day so it does not distract them at night. Learning new skills often coincides with disturbed sleep as babies just want to practice the new skill they have just learnt.
