Are you as excited as we are? Channing Tatum released his first ever children’s book “The One And Only Sparkella*‘, inspired by conversations with his own little 7-year-old girl, Everly.
Illustrated by Kim Barnes
The One and Only Sparkella is a charming ode to self-esteem and the love between a father and daughter. Ella is excited for her first day at a new school. Glimmering pencil case? Check! Shimmering backpack? Check! Glittery ribbons in her hair? Check! She can’t wait to meet the other kids and share her sparkly personality. But her first day doesn’t go quite as planned: Her new classmates don’t like her disco-ball shoes, her PB&J-with-sprinkles sandwich, or her rainbow-y unicorn painting. Ella decides to try to be less sparkly at school the next day so the other kids won’t make fun of her. But with a little help from her dad, she soon learns the importance of just being herself, no matter what other people say.
Channing recently told PEOPLE magazine:
It wasn’t like I had this giant idea that I wanted to write a kids’ book. It was just something that I noticed in my daughter, watching her for the very first time become self-conscious.’
Tatum recalled a time when Everly was worried about standing out at preschool for wearing a unique outfit that she loved.
‘She would wear a cape that, when you held your arms out, you [looked like] a slice of watermelon,’ he said. ‘And it was one of her favourites. But she didn’t want to wear it to school, and when I asked her why, she said, “I don’t want to get made fun of.”
“A lot [in the book] is stuff that Evie and I do. Like I do call her ‘Glitter Poop,’ ” he says. “I was really nervous when I became a single dad, and having to raise a little girl, not being able to have the resource of a woman there to be able to lean into how to relate to her as she grows up. I literally went to YouTube and learned how to braid hair.”
The Magic Mike actor first shared the news about Sparkella* back in August 2020 with this adorable Instagram post:
The book launch took place earlier this month, on 4th May 2021. Channing wrote:
Today is for you, Evie… the one and only #Sparkella!! Your magic taught me how to SPARKLE.”
Since the launch, The One and Only Sparkella* has also managed to top the New York Times BestSellers! The 41-year-old actor was ‘literally speechless’ upon seeing his work on the coveted catalog as he tweeted:
Say what?!?! #1 on the @NYTimes Bestseller List!! I’m literally speechless right now!!! Ten year old me would never believe this. Evie and I want to thank each and every one of you for all of the #Sparkella love. I couldn’t be more excited right now! THANK YOU!! @SparkellaTJones pic.twitter.com/wK0FDjDlvQ
