Two Time Olympic champion Helen Glover has announced she will be making her comeback at ‘Tokyo 2020’ and we couldn’t be more proud of her efforts.
As if Helen hasn’t had enough on her plate managing lockdown with 3 children under 2, she’s now managing her olympic comeback too. This is definitely the inspiration all of us mums need to see this morning!
What’s more, Helen discussed the fact that she is continuing to breastfeed her twins who have recently turned one on January 15th. She spoke on BBC Breakfast this morning: “I have to deal with a low iron level, I’m still breastfeeding the twins and that takes it out of you.”
She said: “I want to physically show my little girl Bo that you can be and do what you want to. That really inspires me, probably even more than I was for London and Rio.”
Helen and her husband, television presenter Steve Backshall, have three children together: two-year-old son Logan and one-year-old twins Bo and Kit.
When she first mentioned her comeback to Steve he said “Helen, most people take up crocheting as a lockdown project, they don’t decide to try to go to the Olympics. This is a little full on even for you!”
The Tokyo 2020 games were postponed and moved to this summer which was part of the reason for Helen’s decision to comeback to rowing.
In an instagram post Helen said:
“I’m excited/anxious to share this with you.. With the support of my family and unwavering backing from @backshall.steve I’ve decided to attempt a comeback for the Tokyo Olympics. Being the best mum possible is always my priority, and I’m looking forward to trying to be the best athlete I can be. This journey will be a different one involving sleepless nights, nap schedules and prioritising cuddles. To be the first mother to make an Olympic team for @britishrowing and the thought of being able to prove to my children that they can achieve anything is a huge motivation and I’m looking forward to sharing my journey with you…”
Helen, who is 34, would be the first woman to make a British Olympic rowing team after having children.
We salute you Helen – what an inspiration you are, we’ll be rooting for you every step of the way!
