A mum breastfeeding her baby on the beach has discovered that she was secretly filmed after coming across a diatribe posted by a total stranger online.
New mummy Izabele Lomax was browsing Facebook when a post in a breastfeeding support group caught her attention - it was a screenshot of a different post that showed a mum being covertly filmed while breastfeeding her small baby at a beach.
The post was captioned; "Quick vent. Just pulled up my Facebook and was greeted with this and I just cannot understand how another female can say this and take VIDEO of this momma feeding her baby and post it to the internet. I blocked out the momma and baby for privacy but it got under my skin so badly."
Izabele then zoomed in on the photo and realised, it was her! She has taken to TikTok to share the experience.
@izlomax ill leave this here 😊 #breastfeeding ♬ original sound - izlomax
Izabele told TODAY.COM that 'she felt her blood start to boil' as she read the comments about her breastfeeding her baby.
The video was captioned with the rant; “I’m not shaming woman who breast feed their babies. I’m shaming the woman who breast feed in public with no respect to cover themselves up and just let their boobs hangout (nipple included) for everyone to see! COVER TF UP!!! I shouldn’t have to cover my sons eyes and explain why your boobs are out and quite frankly I don’t want to see it either. Have some respect!”
In the video which you can watch above, Izabele is sat under a beach umbrella whilst breastfeeding her son Baker, who is only 9 weeks of age, oblivious to the negative attention the individual was giving her. She was joined that afternoon by her family. She has stated that she didn't notice anyone staring, and was in a quiet area, where she didn't feel that anyone could become 'upset' about her feeding her child.
For people who may jump in with suggestions that breastfeeding mums should be obliged to cover themselves (in actual fact, they absolutely do not and should only do this if they want to), temperatures in the area were over 31 degrees Celcius that day, meaning that baby Baker would have been at high risk for overheating if Izabele had covered up. Also, whilst we're a UK-based company and UK breastfeeding laws allow breastfeeding anywhere, this is a story from the U.S. so it's worth adding that mums can also legally breastfeed in any public or private place in all 50 U.S. states, which great to learn!
Izabele has since shared her own response to the video across her social media platforms.
“Imagine waking up, getting on Facebook and seeing this video of yourself yesterday at the beach. You had every opportunity in the world to say something to me. Not that I would have cared or stopped what I was doing. But you instead choose to post a video of me and my child on Facebook. My child was also hungry in multiple restaurants and while we were walking down the street, and guess what? He ate. If you’re sexualizing a breast to a 4 year old (Izabele was able to find out that the woman responsible has a 4 year old son), you’ve got your own set of issues.”
The woman responsible has deleted the video but has not yet reached out to apologise for her actions. In the meantime, the video Izabele posted on her TikTok has continued to garner extremely supportive comments and shares by advocates; our favourite comment was someone sharing "I always tell people to put a shirt over their head so they don’t have to see me lol or they can go to the bathroom to eat while she eats at the table!"
Our verdict...
We're massive advocates of breastfeeding, and stories like this really upset us. It's disappointing that in 2023, this topic is even up for debate. It shouldn't be. Don't like it? Just don't look. Worried about what your children may say? Teach them that boobs can lactate to create milk, it's a simple discussion with no sexual undertones. All we can say is, we're extremely heartened by the fact that the majority of the comments we've seen on this news story are supportive of this mummy, and it's also fantastic that the person who initially shared what they had spotted elsewhere into the mutual breastfeeding support group did so as otherwise, Izabele may never have known!
