A Mum in New Zealand gave birth on the 8th May to a baby boy weighing 16lbs 4oz (7.4kg) – over a stone – and measuring at 57cm long. Just let that sink in!
This is more than double the average baby born. Due to this it took three hours for doctors at Wellington Hospital to administer an epidural before he was finally born by caesarean section on Monday.
The parents stated that because the baby boy was so big, his mother had trouble bending over!
The parents, who did not want to be named, said he was ‘happy and healthy’. “We are not that tall ourselves, so we are not sure where his size has come from – at the moment we are thinking he’s probably just a big baby.”
The newborn will unfortunately have to skip newborn nappies. The sizes generally only go up to 4lbs to 11lbs (2kg to 5kg) and as this child isn’t within these weighs will have to go into size three nappies which are suitable for weights between 9lbs and 20lb children. Hopefully they didn’t stock up on newborn nappies.
His length too will also mean he will need to go into an older child’s size. He was put on the 99.6th percentile of newborn boys. This means his weight and length will see him in clothes for 6 month old children plus!
